Pantsula can be traced back as far as to the 40s. It was developed as a subculture to the already 11 existing tribes in South Africa. By mixing traditional dancing with modern dance and theatrical gestures from everyday life Pantsula was created.
The subculture Pantsula helped the black population of South Africa during hard times of Apartheid. It allowed the people of oppression to express themselves, to communicate with one and other with a new language, new ways of behaving, dressing and dancing.
