Phakathi Inside

Joanna Holewa Chrona’s first solo work, Phakathi Inside, is a personal odyssey—a return to the inner body and the force that dwells within. The piece explores both physical and spiritual dimensions, amplifying the manifestation of an inner avatar: an embodiment of a powerful spirit in physical form.

Through a unique approach to self and movement, Joanna investigates the purpose of dance as a vessel for navigating life’s peaks and valleys.

As Joanna’s avatar embarks on her journey, the room itself transforms, enveloped in light and sound that highlight her essence and presence.
Slow, intricate movements merge with bursts of restrained volcanic energy, giving shape to the life that animates the physical body.

In this work, Joanna continues her long-standing creative exchange with South African artists and culture, a relationship that began in 2015. Phakathi Inside features South African-inspired electronic music with lyrics in isiXhosa, sung by Ntsika Fana Nxganga.
The title Phakathi Inside is South African slang that blends isiZulu and English, and loosely translates to “deep inside.”
